Brief, simple, positive training sessions.

Part of the responsibility of pet ownership includes making sure your dog is well-trained. Dogs who are well trained tend to be happier. They know what to expect and when to expect it. This also provides a safer environment for you, the dog, and your neighbors. You can work with your dog on your own, or get the help of a trainer. Here are some helpful ideas to get you going.

Don't give a puppy too much information and training at once, or you'll wear him out. Brief, simple, positive training sessions are well-suited to the limited supply of energy and attention a pup has to work with. If you try to teach too much, he won't like the training sessions and won't remember everything. This will only frustrate you over time.

Make sure to stay consistent with your word choices when you are training your dog; you do not want to use 2 different words for the same command. This causes a strong association between a word and an action in your dog's mind. Remember to be consistent about what commands you use and what behaviors you expect in every training session. By being consistent, the chances of successfully training your dog are much greater.

Always give your puppy plenty of toys to chew on to help with teething pain. Otherwise, you might find your shoes becoming chew toys. Take it away, and give him a chew toy. If painful teething is the problem, let the puppy chew on a wet washcloth that has been frozen.

When training your dog, use discretion and regard for your dog's attention span. Your dog will get bored and antsy if you spend too much time on one thing. Try to limit initial training sessions to 10 minutes or less.

To be successful when you are training your dog, you need to find out why your dog does the things it does! While your dog is learning what you are teaching him, you are learning what methods your dog responds to the best. It doesn't matter the reason you want to train your dog, you need to offer a variety of exercises along with positive reinforcement. Training will be most successful when the dog is happy.

The best time to start training a dog is when it's a puppy. This is not concrete, but it is known that puppies respond easier to training. Teaching dogs how to behave early in life creates a more respectful animal.

Teaching your dog to not tug and pull when on his leash is an important part of his training. Think of the leash as a safety requirement.

When you are feeling frustrated or impatient, calm yourself before starting training. If you do not give your dog patience they will not pay attention to your efforts.

When you begin training your dog, you should be aware of what his favorite foods are. Since these will be the rewards for good behavior when you are training the dog, it should be something that really motivates him. Take note of how your dog responds when he is given his reward.

Making your dog learn habits that are good from the start is very important. You will have much better success if you teach a dog properly early on, instead of attempting to break negative behaviors later in their life. If you do not want your pet to beg for food, you should never encourage it by feeding it table scraps.

Something you could do is put a toy in the dog's mouth and keep it there. Start by using a clicker and treating him every time he picks up a toy in his mouth. Wait until the dog has the toy in his mouth. After using the clicker, reward him with a treat. It is important to only reward him again if he picks up the toy with his mouth on his own.

Make sure that your dog is well prepared for trips to the veterinarian. Gently run your hands across his whole body, and praise him for calm behavior. You will want to get him ready to tolerate the doctor touching his mouth and paws. You can make your dog more comfortable with strangers touching him by enlisting your friends assistance and have them look over your dog.

It is crucial that everyone who interacts with your dog uses the exact same command phrases as you do. If you use one command phrase and your family uses another then your dog may get confused. By having every single family member use the same commands, better success will be achieved for training your dog.

Dog learn by doing the same thing over and over, and also by being rewarded. First, you must completely walk the dog through what you want to accomplish, and then set up a daily routine around the behavior that includes rewards. This is the right way in teaching a dog a new trick. Show your pet the right way through rewards and repetition.

It is critical that you teach your dog the difference between correct and incorrect behaviors. Everyone who lives with your dog will have to undertake the same behavior for him to learn from your training. This can undo any progress you have made.

Teach your pet the proper way to walk on a leash. When they walk properly, it makes both of you safer when you both go walking.

It is important to take your dog on a rather long walk if you plan on being gone for several hours. If you play with your dogs and exhaust them, it helps the dogs handle the anxiety they may feel from being separated from you when you leave.

Get your dog prepared for early vet exams. Touch your dog gently down the sides of his body and tell him he is being good when he does not react. Help him become adjusted to having his paws and teeth examined. You might want to ask your buddies to assist you in the process.

Whenever you want your dog's attention, use its name. You will not be able to control your dog if you do not get his attention first. Practice calling your dog's name and letting him respond at least tens times a day. Also, it is very inappropriate for you to call the dog over to you and then punish him, as this will teach him to fear you and discourage him from coming when called.

When you get your puppy, be sure to create a bond to him by helping him learn his name. Repeat his name regularly, so he will learn to come to you when he hears it. These should be the primary words your dog needs to learn. Spending a lot of time interacting and playing with your puppy is the best way to establish a bond of love and trust. This will make him easier to train later.

Now that the people who are interested in training their new pet dog have, hopefully, learned some new tricks, they can proceed to pass them along to their pets. Once a dog is on its way to learning, the owner will begin to appreciate the dedication that he or she has shown for doing the right thing for man's best friend.
